He lived in Balch Springs, a suburb just outside of Dallas, Texas, a city where the rate of violent crime “is one of the highest in the nation.”

One June evening, he was sitting in his car in nearby Mesquite when police responded to the sounds of gunfire in the 1600 block of Crestridge Drive.

Ricardo Gonzales Palacios, 17, was found suffering from a gunshot wound on June 19, 2018. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. Police believe he knew his killer.
