He was handsome and beloved. For his aunt, thinking of him evoked laughter and a smile. 

On Aug. 31, 2018, he attempted an armed robbery at a home in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Breaking the back windows, he made his way inside. There, he encountered an alarmed resident. There was a struggle, and the gun he was carrying was ultimately wrestled from his hands.

Daniel James Ling, 18, was shot and killed with his own gun just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2018. He died at the scene.
