Deafening silence forever replaces uncontained laughter

A Mickey Mouse patch is stuck onto his sweater, as he nestles close to his mother and laughs.

The police officer who discovered him doesn’t remember his laughter: instead, he remembers his silence as he lay in his baby carrier, swaddled by blankets, looking around. No tears or wails. He kept putting his tiny hand in the policeman’s much larger one and holding on for dear life.

Tarique Morris, 3 months old, died on Nov. 7, 2018, in Youngstown, Ohio, after the car that he was traveling in with his mother and father was blitzed with bullets. His parents were killed, as well.
