Ruia Reams

Age 0

Durham, North Carolina

Her baby shoes. Tan-and-gold. Never worn.

She was just 10 months old. Her grandmother was waiting for her to grow into her tan-and-gold sandals.

Her mother, nicknamed “Honey,” was 20 years old. The property manager of her home called her “one of the sweetest young ladies you ever could meet.” But her baby’s father was troubling. “He had the police called on him several times,” he said.

Ruia Ream was shot and killed in her home alongside her mother, Zhytila Wilkins, in Durham, North Carolina, on Jan. 11, 2019. Police found her father inside with serious injuries. Durham police called it “a domestic murder/attempted suicide.”
