McKinley Chavous IV

Age 3

Warrenville, South Carolina

Joyful boy made the sky cry

His church community loved watching him dance joyously to soul hits from the 1980s.

He brightened up anyone’s day with his infectious smile and fire-engine red Converse sneakers. His grandfather said that he was “the happiest child I have ever encountered in my life.”

On Sept. 24, 2018, 3-year-old McKinley “Boonie” Chavous IV, picked up his father’s Glock 42 .380-caliber gun and accidentally shot himself in the chest in Warrenville, South Carolina. On the day of his funeral, it poured. "Our older generation said if it was raining and it was a funeral, they made it into heaven," one family friend said.
