Janaya Z. Swain

Age 4

Akron, Ohio

A pretty smile, a little princess

At 4 years old, she was already unique. "I mean, the prettiest smile,” her grandmother said. “Very smart and intelligent.”

Afterward, there would be a pink balloon reading “Little Princess,” hovering near a street pole. Teddy bears, candles and stuffed animals would line the street. Pink hearts and purple stars would splash along the sidewalk, a bouquet of roses marking the spot.

Janaya Z. Swain was sitting in a car next to her three sisters in front of a house when an argument broke out. She died of a gunshot wound to the head on Feb.16, 2018, in Akron, Ohio.
