Muscoy, California

Sobs echoed in the empty streets

Twisted under a purple-and-gold party hat on her birthday, wavy beneath a rose-embellished headband for a trip to the park, pulled back with a white bow for her mother’s party, her hair styles said it all — she was not afraid to be herself.

Bright and always smiling, she didn’t have a care in the world.

On July 20, 2018, Aliya Monarrez López, 2, was at home in Muscoy, California, with her cousin. The boy, 4, picked up a gun allegedly left by their grandfather. The gun discharged, hitting her in the chest. She died at a local hospital. Her mother's sobs echoed through the neighborhood.
