Aspiring doctor hoped to fight cancer

Her dreams began early: In the second grade, she decided that she wanted to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. When she grew up, she wrote in a letter, she wanted to become a doctor and help children with cancer. She loved watching “Grey’s Anatomy.”

She was a rising senior at St. Stephens High School. Her favorite football team? The Denver Broncos. Her favorite color? Yellow.

Katlyn Michelle Wittcop, 17, died from a gunshot on July 18, 2018 in Hickory, North Carolina. The person who shot her thought the gun was unloaded.
