Age 17

Bronx, New York

Gunned down dancing in the streets

Her father has cancer, her mother has heart failure, and her older brother is a hemophiliac. It surprised no one that she wanted to become a nurse. She never wanted anyone to worry about her, her brother says. “I’m going to be okay,” she would tell him.

She loved music and dancing. She was a prominent member of her school’s basketball team.

Vlana Roberts, 17, attended Harry S. Truman High School in the Bronx. She was shot while dancing with her sister outside an apartment building on West 181st St. in West Farms on June 2, 2018. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
