He was the neighborhood’s adopted son

If he overstepped the curfew, it was because he wanted to make sure his friends made it home safely. One Friday, the summer before his sophomore year at KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy, was shaping up to be one of those nights.

He started the weekend at Palumbo Recreation Center’s court, fueling his love for basketball and dream of playing for Temple University. Around 10:30 p.m., he and his friend started walking home. He was a block away from his house.

Symir Walker, 16, died in a shooting on Fitzwater Street in South Philadelphia on June 15, 2018.
