He was a 14-year-old who lived with his mother in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had recently begun his first year of high school.

He loved basketball. He worked different jobs to earn money to buy basketball sneakers.  

On July 31, 2018, Surrell R. Gaines was shot and killed by a 13-year-old in the neighborhood of Mount Auburn.The unnamed boy who killed Gaines is alleged to have recklessly handled the shotgun that carried out the fatal wound. After the shooting, the boy fled the scene, leaving Gaines to bleed to death.
