They cheered for a lost future

When his name was called during high school graduation, his loved ones erupted in prolonged cheers. Afterward, he posed for pictures, draped in red robes, holding his diploma and a miniature stuffed bear with a graduation cap. He wore a blue flower lei.

Though both of his parents were well-known dancers, he was a soccer player. One mom recounted how he and her son would eat snacks and play together after a practice or game.

Mohamed Soumah, 18, was fatally shot on Dec. 1, 2018, at a party in Oakland. He had recently moved there from Berkeley, California, after high school graduation.
