Jacob Smith

Age 15

Carthage, Mississippi

A playful spirit, a memorable smile

He was popular, a football player and an honor roll student. He was featured in his school’s promotional video.

A Facebook post by Kirby Middle School in Memphis, Tennessee, described “his bright smile, infectious laugh, and playful spirit.” He and a friend were playing with a 12-gauge shotgun one day at a relative’s house when it accidentally discharged.

Jacob Smith, 15, was shot and killed in Carthage, Mississippi, on June 30, 2018. Kirby had lost another student this way: Carl Fowler, 13, died in November 2017, also killed by a shotgun, also with friends at play.
