Elizabeth Juarez

Age 13

Burien, Washington

She never met her new niece

She was a vivacious teenager with a passion for playing sports. Her neighbors found comfort in her friendly, familiar face. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her niece.

Her sister said, “She was understanding. She was amazing.” Her classmates at Sylvester Middle School felt the same way. They collaborated with Burien’s Environmental Science Center to build a pollinator pathway garden in her honor, a monument that “really underscored how many lives [she] had touched.”

On March 28, 2018, Elizabeth Juarez, 13, and a friend were fatally shot outside a Burien, Washington, apartment complex in a gang-related confrontation. Juarez’s niece was born just two weeks later.
