A winning team loses its star

A blur of yellow against the green turf, he dashes towards the end zone to tackle the running back, floating in mid-air above the goal line. At his latest game, the Marshall High School senior played safety and made five tackles.

The undefeated Marshall Buffs were lined up to play at their state championships. “As a team we lean on each other. Not only was he a teammate, he was a brother,” teammate Korey King said.

On Dec. 10, 2018, Drew Shannon Conley, 17, was fatally shot in the upper leg by his uncle during an argument at their Fort Worth, Texas, home.
