Derrick LaQuinn Lee Jr.

Age 12

Asheville, North Carolina

A stray bullet that found him

He was a football player who soaked up the hot Carolina sun. He loved Takis hot corn chips 一 he’d eat a whole bag without water. Active in church, he wanted to be a preacher. His grandpa called him a treasure. Just waiting for someone to discover him.

He lived in Lee Walker Heights — “a place of community and despair.” Where the sound of fireworks masked gunshots. Where treasures can be lost.

A stray bullet from a drive-by shooting missed its target and killed Derrick LaQuinn Lee Jr. on July 1, 2018, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was 12 years old.
