Derick Alexander

Age 18

Oakland, California

Always carried photo of his friend

He was a football player who represented more than just himself. Around his neck he wore a photo wrapped in plastic: It was his friend and teammate Davon Ellis, 14, shot and killed in February 2015. He would hang out at Mike’s Mini Mart across from Castlemont High School, making memories with new friends.

Later they would say that he had “the brightest, most entertaining personality one can have.”

On June 27, 2018, Derick Alexander, 18, was shot outside Mike’s along with a 17-year-old boy and two men aged 25 and 29. They survived. He did not.
