Aspiring soldier hoped for "smoove" future

When he was 10-years-old, he recorded a song he called “Love Song,” earning him the nickname “Playa Tay.” “He always held the house together,” his mother said.

He played football and ran track, and had hopes of going into the Armed Forces. On the day he was to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, he wrote on Facebook, “ I hope everything go smoove.”

Christavian Toomes, 18, was shot dead around 1:45 am on Turner Field Road in Covington, Tennessee, on Sept. 11, 2018. It was the small city’s second murder of the year.
