Giacomo James Shields

Age 6

Queens, New York

He came with mom, neither left

He was an adventurer. His mom posted it all on Facebook: Motor-bike rides, garden visits, and trips  from the Netherlands to New York.

His parents were in a trans-Atlantic custody dispute. He had come back to New York with his mom to visit his father. Some days into the trip, his mom’s friend, who traveled with them, couldn’t get her on the phone. The friend alerted his mom’s sister in the Netherlands, who Googled “New York” to check if anything had happened there. Her instincts were right.

Police say Giacomo James “Jimmy” Shields, 6, was shot to death by his father in the Corona neighborhood of Queens in New York City on July 30, 2019.
