Justin Lewis Maness

Age 14

Robbins, North Carolina

A rising freshman, downed by gun

A rising freshman, he lived two miles from his high school, where classes would begin in 10 days. He found adventure in hunting doves and deer.

His house, surrounded by trees, connected to the road through a gravel path. Although Moore County Sheriff Neil Godfrey would later say that his father was “not negligent” in the way he stored his gun outside in a gun safe, deputies also said what happened was “not random.”

Justin Lewis Maness, 14, was shot and killed outside of his home on Aug. 10, 2018, in Robbins, North Carolina.
