Jokester with a thing for nicknames

His dark eyes hinted at a calm seriousness. But his girlfriend called him a “jokester” who gave funny nicknames to his friends. A sophomore at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, he was close to family.

He was riding along in the backseat of a Dodge van when the driver allegedly cut off another car. A passenger in that car had a gun.

Police found the van on Gun Club Road near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Inside was Efrain Arzate Jr., 16, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital and died of his injuries days later, on March 20, 2018.
