Challenging student had a compassionate heart

He was one of a kind, athletic, funny and compassionate.

He attended the Pruette SCALE Academy, an alternative middle and high school focused on empowering students to develop the skills necessary to return to a traditional school setting. “You would challenge me in many ways, but that was who you were,” English teacher Erik Wiechmann wrote in a tribute. “I hate that you were taken from this world at such an early age, but you will never be forgotten.”

Matthew James Jurado, 17, was shot and killed on Maple Street in Greensboro, North Carolina, around 2:40 a.m. on April 15, 2018.
