Yovanni Daniel Banos-Merino

Age 10

Asbury Park, New Jersey

Liked snowball fights, riding his bike

His smile was infectious. He loved snowball fights with his neighbor’s nephews. He liked to ride his bike. He never searched for trouble.

He was in the fifth grade at Bradley Elementary School, a short walk from the beach. It was a long way, 2,627 miles, from Asbury Park, New Jersey, to Mexico, where his family came from. But “he always seemed happy,” a classmate said.

He was with his mother at home one day when a gunman outside started spraying bullets. Yovanni Daniel Banos-Merino, 10, died on Feb. 21, 2018, of a single gunshot wound.
