Candles lit, arranged in a heart

The Community Street Soldiers knock on doors in York, Pennsylvania, trying to build awareness around gun violence. The group was formed in the fall of 2018 after an incident on Linden Avenue.

The victim, 17, was a high school student at William Penn Senior High School. “He was a good person. Everybody liked him,” a close friend said, “and he meant everything to me.”

The murder that galvanized the Community Street Soldiers into action was the death of Ruban Lee Dejesus. He was shot on Oct. 21, 2018 in York. On Linden Ave., around which the Street Soldiers would later rally, his loved ones lit candles in the shape of a heart and an "R" in his memory.
