Robert West II

Age 10

Independence, Louisiana

Thirteen years old, his father’s wingman

He was a 13-year-old from Independence, Louisiana, the kind of kid who would drop in on his principal and give her advice on how to feed her pet fish.

Despite their split, he was close to both parents. He and his father had a special way of saying goodbye in the mornings, yelling “I love you!” three times in the carpool lane. A few weeks earlier, he’d asked his dad to be “his wingman” at his first school dance.

While packing to go to his father’s house on Christmas Eve, Robert West II and his mother were shot and killed.
