"Messing around" ends high school dreams

He enjoyed collecting sneakers. In one photo, he proudly holds two shoes near his face: one with red detailing, the other with black.

He was hopeful about his future, having recently completed the eighth grade at Estrella Mountain Elementary School. "He just graduated and was so happy that he made it to high school," his aunt told CBS 5. “He couldn’t believe it.”

On June 5, 2018, Oscar Torres Jr., 14, was accidentally, fatally shot in Glendale, Arizona. That night, he and his neighbor were "messing around" with an unsecured handgun belonging to his friend's mother. Just hours later, his high school promotion papers arrived.
