Monti Davon Hughes

Age 15

Norfolk, Virginia

A kind heart, a quick smile

He often stopped to talk with people in the neighborhood. “He was loved,” said his cousin. His science teacher called him “a young man with a kind heart and a quick smile.” Afterward, his classmates designed “Long Live Monti” T-shirts in his honor.

One Sunday night, he asked his mom if he could come home from his dad’s house to see his friends.

At 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, police found Monti Davon Hughes, 15, suffering with multiple gunshot wounds on Herbert Collins Way in Norfolk, Virginia. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died.
