“I got a speech for you”

In the grainy video, his 5-year-old self was dressed in an over-large, pinstriped suit standing in front of a bunk bed overflowing with clothes. He said his name with an innocent boast, and began. “I got a speech for you,” he said. “I have a dream…”

Ten years later, he was 15 and attending South Oak Cliff High School, with the same confident personality.

On Dec. 15, 2018, Mark Alan Oderbert II was shot and killed in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, at 5:47 p.m. In the video, Oderbert’s 5-year-old self, in the suit and too-large sleeves, finished the speech and threw his hands up.
