A friend to those in need

She remembers a Monday years ago when he held the door for her crying son. He put his arm around him, walked him inside and said, “Come on, Zane, it’s OK.”

He was known for speaking out for others and helping those in need. She still remembers his compassion. “That type of grace and kindness is so rare in our world,” Zane’s mother wrote, “yet it came so easily from a 5-year-old in first grade.”

Five years later, on Jan. 17, 2019, a murder-suicide left Allen Park Elementary student Julian Ellis, Jr. 10, shot dead by his own mother in Fort Myers, Florida.
