Brain cancer had taken his brother

His brother, 15 at the time, died from brain cancer four years before.

Despite struggling in school, he worked hard and always had a smile on his face. He graduated from Cathedral City High School in June of 2018 and got a job soon after. He rejoiced in his newfound independence as an adult.

On Feb. 3, 2019 in Palm Springs, California, Juan Duarte Raya, 18, was killed in a shooting incident that claimed the lives of three others, including two of his close friends from middle and high school. He died less than a month before his 19th birthday.
