Joseph Duarte

Age 18

Wilmington, California

Three men, two dead, one gun

It was his first year of adulthood. His friend, Cesar Gutierrez, was visiting.

After two days of stormy weather, the skies had cleared, just in time for the Los Angeles Marathon. The two friends were standing on the sidewalk, near the Pan Y Leche Bakery, a place one customer said had “the best Mexican bread in town.”

Joseph Duarte, 18, was shot on March 18 by an unknown person, along with Cesar Gutierrez, 24, in the 800 block of Bayview Avenue in Wilmington, California. Duarte died in the hospital at 2:42 p.m., 22 minutes before his friend.
