His 17th birthday party never came

His 17th birthday party was coming up that weekend. His parents had chipped in for an above-ground pool for the occasion and as he slipped out the back door, he glanced at the water, still and sparkling.

“I’ve just got to get through one more day,” he said.

When he arrived at his first period art class at Santa Fe High School on Friday, May 18, 2018, he was still twitching with excitement for the festivities ahead. His elation was soon cut short, however, when a gunman entered and began firing at him and his classmates. Jared Conard Black, 17, was killed that day.
