Sounds of summer replaced with gunfire

She and her three best friends were inseparable. She planned to someday buy a house with one of them, Chinyere Jordan, after becoming a nurse.

She attended Manley Career Academy High School in Chicago. Enjoying the final nights of summer, she and her friends gathered at a block party. She was headed to the bathroom while a musician sang the lyrics, “You ain’t gonna see me fall” — a sound immediately replaced with gunfire.

Jahnae Patterson, 17, better known as “Nae Nae,” was shot multiple times and killed on Aug. 5, 2018, in Chicago, Illinois. Forty other people, including several teens, were shot there within seven hours.
