His family and teachers called him Ismael, but to his friends he was Tata, the first word he spoke.
"He was just, like, a nice guy,” a friend said. “He liked ... listening to music and stuff. He was a calm person." His mother was on her way to the store when she heard the police sirens.
On May 19, 2018, Ismael Guzman, 16, was in front of his friend’s house in Turlock, California, when he was shot in the back. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. His 10-year-old cousin saw him lying on the ground; afterwards, he had nightmares.
