Heidy Janeth Rivas Villanueva

Age 7

Jacksonville, Florida

At 7, her dreams, future gone

Only 7 years old, but she wanted to work so her mother could stop. She and her family had left Honduras when she was 3, to find a better life.

On Monday, she was set to start first grade. “She had already planned out her future,” her father said.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, Heidy Janeth Rivas Villanueva was in the car with her father and younger sibling outside the El Tapatio market at 103rd Street in Jacksonville, Florida, while her mother shopped. A stray bullet struck her in the head. Her father picked her up and ran toward a nearby hospital. She died in his arms.
