Broken dreams of a better life

His English as a New Language teacher at Bellport High School shows a picture of him in the classroom: smiling, pencil in hand, one earbud dangling. He had “a wonderful smile” and “always made our classroom a little brighter,” she said.

He had moved from El Salvador four years ago to join his dad in East Patchogue, New York, and was just about to start his senior year and a new job with his father at a local baked goods factory.

Emilio Sanchez Maldonado, 17, was shot in front of his home on the 200 Avenue of Hampton Avenue in East Patchogue on July 3, 2018.
